From the rural idyll of Dorset to the cruel streets of the Philippines.
From the Shallows of the Sulu Sea takes the reader along with the Dorset-born Kellard family on their odyssey to found a home for Street Children on the remote island of Palawan.
Along the way the reader meets a host of vivid and engaging characters both from the animal kingdom like Tom the Guard-Goose, Daisy the shoe-devouring Doberman and Monkey-Monkey the larder-raiding long-tailed macaque, along with equally fascinating and endearing representatives from the ranks of humanity. We meet Dong the tree-swinging bodyguard, Benny the sea-nomad, Ella the gate-rattling street waif and Junjun the foundling toddler, amongst a dramatis personae of local Filipinos, Badjao sea-people and the Kellard family themselves.
Each character has their moment centre-stage, related with a piquant blend of compassion and humour, each separate story combining to form a single compelling narrative culminating in a climax where many lives are saved from disaster.
The personal faith which motivated the Kellard’s voyage of compassion is related simply and without religiosity, with human frailty on candid, disarming display. Through seeing the example of imperfect and needy people making a difference, readers will find themselves envisioned to set aside their own weaknesses or fears and galvanise their unique talents and life-experience in the service of others.
Everyone loves a good story, especially when it is shot through with humanity, honesty, humour and hope. The darkness which is cast when describing such tragedies as poverty, abandonment, child-marriage, neglect and abuse, are dispelled by the light of seeing survivors recused and accepted into a new ‘family’ where each inimitable person is cherished, loved and provided for. Humour and hilarity are never far away as the funny side of each high-or-low is fervently sought and eagerly found.
Fasten your seatbelts for a journey that is entertaining, painfully real and joyful! From the Shallows of Sulu Sea spans numerous genres; a family biography of embracing a new destiny, a cultural travelogue of an outstandingly beautiful tropical location, a spiritual journey from comfortable repose to overseas mission and an entertaining and real-life ‘thriller’ where real lives are at stake.
